Learning Online in Western Australia: Zac's Experience with CGA

When Zac made the leap to Crimson Global Academy (CGA), he didn’t just change schools - he embraced a globally connecting, academically rigorous environment that aligned with his passions and ambitions.

Living in rural Western Australia as the youngest of three sons, Zac is not just your average student. He’s an active member of a youth leadership and marine conservation program where he monitors dolphins, turtles, and coral reefs, and hones his skills in ecology, scuba diving, and even high ropes courses. Zac balances his offline adventures with online academics, where CGA provides a platform for him to thrive academically.

Why CGA? The Appeal of Live, Flexible Online Learning

Zac and his family discovered CGA in early 2022. For a student living rurally, far from traditional school campuses, CGA offered more than just a convenient learning pathway, it offered connection.

“Traditional schools are some distance away from where I live," Zac shares. “Being at CGA cuts out some travel issues for us. Classes also tend to be much smaller than in traditional schools, which means you get more personalised attention, more opportunities to participate, and more direct feedback from teachers"

Although familiar with learning online having tried other platforms before, CGA was Zac’s first experience with a live, online classroom - and the difference was clear. "The great teachers at CGA make the classroom experience lively and interactive. It’s good to be able to work with other students on tasks and ask questions during class".

Academic Depth Through the A Level Pathway

Zac began his journey at CGA in the pre-IGCSE program at age 11 and has steadily progressed through the curriculum. He’s now preparing to enter the A Level stage with a deep love for the sciences.

“I’m currently studying IGCSE Photography, Chemistry and Computer Science, as well as AS Mathematics and Physics" Zac shares, though the sciences are definitely where his passions lie.

The A Level Pathway has been an ideal fit for Zac’s academic goals. With its emphasis on a few subjects studied in depth, he’s been able to dive deeply into areas that matter most to him - particularly Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology - all of which support his aspirations for a future in science.

What Sets CGA Apart: Global Classrooms and Real Support

With teachers and students joining CGA from around the world, Zac finds himself constantly learning from different cultures and perspectives.

Discussing CGA's ability rather than age based learning, Zac explains that students "can move ahead in subjects they're strong in and take their time with those they find more challenging".

The support from teachers and pastoral staff has been a highlight. "Smaller classes allows the teachers to support individual students more effectively... I know I can ask my teachers or Dean for help when i need it".

He’s also grown in areas he didn’t expect, from online tools to self-discipline, time management, communication, and confidence. Zac shares that the being able to actively contribute in small class sizes in particular helped him "develop both his communication skills and confidence".

A Day in the Life: Study, Snacks, and Scuba Dreams

Zac’s school day typically begins around 7:15am, with classes starting shortly after. Thanks to CGA’s flexible schedule and four-day academic week, he has time not just for his studies, but for his regular activities, walks, and excursions too such as dolphin monitoring, photography, and the occasional basketball game.

“There are a lot of snacks in my breaks - a perk of studying close the kitchen!” he shares. “The 4 day school week allows me to fit all my commitments including homework into my week.

Community, Confidence, and Looking Ahead

Despite being online, Zac feels deeply connected to the CGA community. "Even though it's an online environment, I never feel unsupported" Zac shares. He’s a member of the Murder Mystery Club (yes, costumes included), has travelled to New Zealand for a science practical week, and recently joined a CGA meet up in Perth with other Western Australian families.

“Being awarded a scholarship was a real confidence boost as it helped me feel even more a part of my school” Zac says.

As he looks to the future, the A Level Pathway continues to offer the foundation he needs. “I am really keen to work in a science related area, so the A Level pathway allows me to focus on those subjects".

Advice for Future Online Learners

Zac doesn’t sugar-coat it - online school comes with challenges. But for students willing to be organised, curious, and open-minded, the rewards are real.

"Think about the things you'd love about online learning - staying inside on cold wet days, drinks and snacks always close by... but just because its home-based doesn't mean there's no routine" Zac shares, highlighting that there is still a need for learners to "be extra organised, work independently, and be respectful of the learning environment."

"But if being challenged, learning at your academic level and being around like-minded students is your thing, then CGA may be just right for you!"
