What does it mean to reach your full potential? For many, the path to a top-tier university is a straight line through a traditional classroom, but for Osei, a CGA student based in Japan, that path was anything but linear. Osei faced a choice that many ambitious students encounter: continue struggling in a rigid, high-stress environment, or find a new way to learn that prioritised both his health and his global ambitions.
By choosing the flexibility of online school, Osei didn't just survive his final year of high school; he thrived, earning a 4.5 GPA and securing a clean sweep of acceptances from world-class institutions like the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, and International Christian University (ICU).
This is his story of resilience, strategy, and the power of tailored online education.
For years, Osei followed the traditional path at an international school, eventually entering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. However, the transition from Grade 10 to Grade 11 brought a significant increase in academic rigour that coincided with a deeply personal challenge: managing a severe chronic illness.
Before joining CGA, I felt very uncertain about my future. The IB is a very rigorous and stressful program, and managing that while living with chronic illness was extremely difficult. I had to think constantly about my health, hospital visits, medication, and maintaining a stable lifestyle while keeping up academically.
The pressure of a fixed school schedule meant Osei was often fighting his own body just to make it to class. He realised that to reach the Ivy League-level universities he dreamed of, he needed a school that adapted to him, not the other way around.
A recommendation from a former student led Osei to Crimson Global Academy. For Osei, the realisation that he could receive a world-class education from his own room in Nagoya was life-changing.
Until then, online school had never been something I was considering. But after hearing about it, I realised that studying from the comfort of my own room while managing my health could reduce my stress and give me a better academic environment. That was a huge reason why I decided to transfer.
Osei enrolled full-time in the US High School Diploma Pathway at CGA, strategically switching from the IB to Advanced Placement (AP) courses. This allowed him to focus on specific subjects with extreme precision, a move that would eventually define his university application profile.
Osei’s Grade 12 schedule was a powerhouse of rigorous AP subjects, specifically selected to fuel his interest in economics, international relations, and social sciences:
The transition wasn't easier; it was more focused. Osei utilised CGA’s recorded classes and AI summaries to ensure he never missed a beat, even on days when his health required him to rest.
At CGA, I could ask questions at my own pace and have more meaningful discussions with teachers. That helped me understand things more deeply. Being able to go back to the recorded lesson or check the AI summary was a huge help. Those tools made it much easier for me to review important points and remember things I had missed.
By the end of his senior year, Osei achieved a weighted GPA of 4.5, demonstrating that when a student is given the flexibility to learn when they are physically at their best, they can produce world-class results.
In a traditional school, a student’s unique health needs or specific academic goals can sometimes get lost in the crowd. At CGA, Osei found a community that prioritised his individual journey.
I really appreciated how much support I received. Japanese university applications, especially for schools like Waseda, Sophia, and ICU, were much more complicated. They required recommendation letters, counsellor communication, and a lot of detailed documentation.
Osei credits several key figures with helping him navigate the high-stakes world of Grade 12 admissions:
Admissions officers at top universities look for more than just grades; they look for leadership, passion, and resilience. His extracurricular profile was a unique blend of high-level athletics and social impact:
My strategist helped me understand how to present my extracurriculars in a meaningful way. I learned to choose and present activities in ways that best matched each university.
Osei’s decision to take control of his education led to an incredible list of acceptances from prestigious institutions across two continents:
| Region | University Acceptances |
|---|---|
| Canada | University of Toronto (St. George, Mississauga, Scarborough) |
| Canada | University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Okanagan) |
| Japan | International Christian University (ICU) - Osei's Final Choice! |
Beyond the acceptances, Osei found something even more valuable: a mindset shift. He credits his journey with helping him mature earlier and find meaning in his challenges.
What I am proud of is the shift in my mindset. Instead of seeing [my condition] only as suffering, I learned to change the way I think. I realised that constantly asking 'Why me?' would not change anything. I feel that this experience helped me mature earlier and understand life more deeply than I otherwise would have.
Osei is now preparing to attend ICU in Tokyo, with plans to eventually pursue graduate school overseas in the US, Canada, or the UK. His advice to students who feel stuck in a traditional system is clear:
First, I would recommend it to students who, like me, are dealing with health issues, personal struggles, or circumstances that make traditional school difficult. Not every challenge is visible, and many students are balancing social, academic, and medical pressures at the same time. For people in that situation, the flexibility of CGA can be life-changing.
Second, I would recommend it to students who feel like they are running out of time or are struggling academically. I was not a straight-A student, and I was not at the very top academically. But CGA gave me a chance to improve and raise my academic performance significantly.
So I would say to those students: it is not too late. CGA can still give you an opportunity to change your path.
At Crimson Global Academy, we don’t just teach subjects; we empower students like Osei to take control of their education and reach their full potential on their own terms.
