Kaleb is 13, lives in Taichung, Taiwan, and spends his mornings 3D printing before most students have opened a textbook. He's a full-time student at Crimson Global Academy, and this year his robotics team went from national champions to a qualifying spot at the world championships. His story is a useful answer to a question a lot of parents in Taiwan are quietly asking: what do you do when a bright child has outgrown the local options?

Three Schools, One Recurring Problem

Kaleb didn't start at CGA. He started at a local school, moved to a Montessori programme, then enrolled in a bilingual government school, the kind of path many international families in Taiwan will recognise. None of them held.

"We never found an environment which was challenging enough for him intellectually, and to help him continue that curiosity that I think he's had from a very young age," says Eric, Kaleb's father.

The specific problem was concrete, not vague dissatisfaction. Kaleb was working at a higher level in Maths and English than his school could accommodate. Rather than slow down to match the rest of the class, he needed a structure that would let him move at his own pace in the subjects where he was already ahead. That's what brought the family to CGA.

What A School Day Looks Like For A Student Building His Own Robotics Practice

Ask Kaleb what a typical day involves and the answer isn't "class from 9 to 3." It's a schedule he's built around his own energy and interests.

He's up between 6 and 7 AM, often for a run, then breakfast. From there he starts a 3D print, works through homework and study, and updates his robotics engineering notebook, a running record competitive robotics teams keep of design decisions and testing results. Formal classes start in the afternoon and run until around 7 PM.

It's an unusual shape for a 13-year-old's day, and it only works because the coursework isn't scheduled to fill every waking hour the way a conventional school timetable is. Eric puts it plainly: "If I think about where Kaleb would be three years out from where he was to where he is now, if he had stayed at school, I don't think he would have had the time to invest in his robotics, the 3D printing, networking equipment, building servers."

From National Champions To A Spot At The World Championships

The clearest proof that the extra time pays off: Kaleb and his robotics team recently won first place at the national championships, which qualified them for the world championships. That result didn't come from a few hours here and there. Kaleb and his teammates put in 10 to 20 hours a week on the robot, the code, and the driving, on top of a full academic course load.

It's the kind of commitment that's genuinely hard to sustain inside a school day that runs 8 AM to 3 PM with homework stacked on top. Kaleb's schedule was built to hold both at once.

Why The Family Chose CGA Specifically, Not Just "More Advanced" Schooling

Eric was clear that acceleration on its own wasn't the goal. "We considered CGA as we were looking for something more rigorous. It seemed like it was promising in terms of what he could do, but also, we felt comfortable that it was still a holistic education programme for him, where he could get the challenges and rigour that he needed, but also make sure he still got everything he needed as an individual."

That's the balance Kaleb describes from the student side too: coursework that matches where he actually is academically, paired with enough open time to keep building the things he cares about outside class.

What Kaleb Wants Next, And Why

Kaleb's stated goal is MIT. Part of the pull is straightforward: it's one of the strongest technical universities in the world, and Kaleb is already living a technical life - robotics competitions, 3D printing, building his own servers. Part of it is smaller and more personal. His father once told him about MIT students who worked out card-counting odds at blackjack, and the idea stuck with him.

Whether or not that's the exact path he ends up on, it says something about what Kaleb is optimising for: an environment full of people who think the way he does.

His Advice For Other Families 

Kaleb's advice is short and specific to what actually changed for him: "If they like having the flexibility and the free time to go into their passions and hobbies, then I think CGA would be a good choice for them."

That's really the throughline of the whole story. Three schools in, the family wasn't looking for a harder curriculum for its own sake. They were looking for a structure that could hold two things at once: real academic rigour in the subjects where Kaleb was already ahead, and enough time back in the day for him to become genuinely good at something outside the classroom. A national robotics title and a world championships qualification, built on 10 to 20 hours a week squeezed in around a full course load, only happen when both of those are true at the same time.

For a family in Taiwan, or anywhere else, watching a child outgrow what's in front of them, that's the part worth paying attention to. The goal was never a faster school. It was one that would get out of the way of what a kid like Kaleb was already trying to build.
