What will students learn in AP English Literature

In the AP English Literature course, students will learn how to understand and evaluate works of fiction, poetry, and drama from different time periods and cultures. Through reading literary works and writing essays, they will explain and support their analyses.

During this course students will develop skills in close reading, drawing conclusions from details, and identifying an author's techniques and their effects. They will also gain proficiency in presenting their interpretations and making persuasive arguments in writing.

The focus of this class is on fiction texts, including poetry and literature, allowing students to explore the art of literary composition and the use of various literary devices. It's an excellent opportunity for aspiring writers to enhance their writing skills and delve into the world of literature.

Is the AP English Literature Exam hard?

The AP English Literature and Composition exam is often considered one of the more challenging AP exams. It requires students to analyze complex literary works, demonstrate advanced writing skills, and make well-supported interpretations. Success on the exam typically requires thorough preparation, strong reading comprehension, and critical thinking abilities.

In 2022, 77.9% of students scored 3 or higher on the AP English Literature exam. The test lasts for 3 hours and has two sections:

  • Section 1: 55 multiple-choice questions, contributing to 45% of the total score.
  • Section 2: 3 free-response questions, which make up the remaining 55% of the total score.
