Step-by-Step: How to Apply to Universities in Europe as an International Student

1. Choose Your Countries and Universities

Start by researching the best universities in Europe that align with your interests, budget, and long-term goals. Consider:

  • Course structure and language of instruction
  • University rankings and reputation
  • Campus life and extracurriculars
  • Location, safety, and cost of living

Some universities (like in the Netherlands or Germany) are highly research-focused, while others offer smaller, liberal arts-style programmes.

CGA encourages students to research universities around the world. By taking the time to understand each university comprehensively—beyond just rankings and reputations—students can make informed decisions to ensure they have a university experience that's suited to their particular goals and needs.

Tip: Don’t just rely on rankings. Find your fit.

“In my opinion, one of the most neglected areas of the university admissions process is college research. Students and families first need to reflect on what exactly they are looking for in their university experience and environment. Then, they need to take the time to deeply explore the academic and career opportunities available at each university on their list, but also, social and extracurricular life, the pros and cons of the location (including the weather!), the particular school culture and more.”

2. Understand Entry Requirements

Admissions requirements can vary drastically. Some common considerations:

  • High school qualifications: Many universities accept A Levels, the IB, International GCSEs, APs, and the US High School Diploma.
  • Standardised test results: SATs or ACTs may still be required by some institutions.
  • English proficiency: Most programmes taught in English require IELTS or TOEFL scores. Check the English language requirements for European universities on each university’s site.

3. Know the Application Process

Each country has its own system:

  • United Kingdom: Applications go through UCAS. Wondering how UCAS works for international students? It’s a centralised system where students apply to up to five universities at once. Personal statements are key. Get the latest update on how personal statements are changing in 2026.
  • Netherlands: Uses Studielink for applications. Some programmes have “numerus fixus” (limited spots), requiring early application and extra steps.
  • Germany: Applications typically go through uni-assist.de and may require translated transcripts and additional entrance tests.

Some European universities also accept the Common App used by US institutions.

4. Build a Strategic University List

A smart admission strategy for university includes:

  • Reach schools: ambitious targets
  • Match schools: solid academic fit
  • Safety schools: likely admits with backup scholarships.
